Mid-Infrared Circumstellar Shell Sources discovered with Spitzer: An Obscured Population of Massive Stars?

We have discovered a large number of symmetric shells around luminous central sources at 24 microns with MIPS onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. Most of these shells are not visible in the shorter wavelengths bands of IRAC or archival 2MASS and optical images. A careful archival follow-up effort has revealed 99% of these sources to be previously unknown. We suspect that a fraction of the central stars represent a population of highly obscured massive stars. We will present early results from follow-up observations aimed at characterizing this population.
