Massive Star Formation in the LMC

The Magellanic System offers a nearly unique laboratory to study the formation of massive stars at known distances in more diverse environments than our own Galaxy. Previous studies have revealed more similarities than differences in how massive stars form in the LMC compared to our Galaxy. For example, high resolution radio imaging revealed a similar population of compact HII regions to the Milky Way. Spitzer, and the SAGE survey in particular, has recently provided a complete census of massive protostars and compact HII regions. With Spitzer data, we can study the distribution of massive star formation relative to dense gas, search for deviations or poor sampling of the IMF, and probe the radiative feedback from massive stars in extreme environments like 30 Doradus.
