X-rays and Magnetic Fields in Young OB Stars

Some hot stars in OB associations and star-forming regions show a wide range of unexpected phenomena at X-ray energies, including hard X-rays associated with very high-temperature shocks, long- and short-term variability, and narrow X-ray line profiles. In some cases, these are very massive spectroscopic binaries whose X-rays are most likely produced in a wind interaction zone. In other cases, the X-rays appear to be produced by magnetically confined wind shocks. We review the evidence for magnetic fields and wind shocks in O and very-early B stars stars like theta 1 Ori C, theta 2 Ori A, and tau Sco, and suggest approaches for diagnosing magnetically confined wind shocks in other stars.
