Stellar Content of HII Regions

We present Spitzer/IRS (mid-IR) and VLT/ISAAC (near-IR) spectroscopy of individual O stars in the young cluster W31 (previously studied by Blum, Damineli & Conti 2001). The talk will focus upon the long-standing inverse problem of establishing stellar properties from mid-IR fine structure lines. A comparison between observed neon and sulphur line ratios with expectations from photoionization models will be made, together with empirical calibrations of metal-rich compact HII regions in the inner Milky Way whose ionizing stars are known, supplementing W31 members with G29.96-0.02 from Hanson et al. (2005) and G23.96+0.15 from Crowther & Furness (2008).
