Starbursts, Star Clusters, and Blowing the Galactic Winds

That large numbers of massive stars form in compact massive star clusters with ~10 pc sizes acts to concentrate UV radiation, winds, and supernovae into small regions of time and space. The gregarious nature of these cYMCs which often crowd within few hundred pc scale starburst clumps or rings further enhances their impact on the host galaxy, making them prime local drivers for galactic outflows. This quick tour of an emerging topic will touch on the situation in M82 and NGC 1569, two starbursts with optically prominent galactic winds, and then consider a few of the wider implications of this mode of massive star formation, including possible connections to youthful galaxies seen at high redshifts.
