Massive Young Stellar Objects: a Near Infrared View

I will review what observations have been able to tell us about young massive stars and the star birth process. This talk will concentrate on near infrared studies which have proliferated in recent years owing to large format detectors and their deployment on big telescopes. The near infrared regime is long enough in wavelength to penetrate much of the interstellar dust on lines of site to Galactic star forming regions while still offering a potential window into the young massive star photosphere. I will also highlight new adaptive optics (AO) observations which allow for much higher contrast between massive young stars and their intense nebular backgrounds. AO observations are optimized in the K-band where the image correction is best and the penetration of interstellar dust is highest (in the near infrared).
