Mass-loss Predictions as a function of Metallicity
Jorick Vink
Armagh Observatory
Radiation-driven winds constitute an important aspect of our understanding of the evolution of massive stars and input into the interstellar medium. Here we present consistent solutions for both the mass-loss rate and the velocity field of O-type stars using a parametrized description of the line force, obtained from Monte-Carlo multi-line radiative transfer calculations. We find good agreement with empirical constraints. Furthermore, we present our latest mass-loss predictions as a function of metallicity and compare the mass-loss-metallicity exponent with recent empirical results from the VLT FLAMES large programme on massive stars. Finally, we discuss the physics of the bi-stability jump and its relevance for the evolution of LBVs as well as the rotational properties of massive stars, with particular emphasis on the implications for the long gamma-ray burst phenomenon.
