The Flagstaff area is rich in history, culture, and natural features, offering some of the best opportunities for hiking, camping, and sight-seeing in the southwest USA.
Geologic attractions include: the San Francisco Peaks mountain range, just north of town; spectacular red sandstone formations of Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona, south of Flagstaff; Sunset Crater National Monument, a park of cinder-cone volcanoes; Meteor Crater, the famous meteor impact site east of Flagstaff; and of course, the Grand Canyon.
Flagstaff is the closest city to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is a scenic 1.5 - 2 hour drive north. The park entry fee is $25 per vehicle, valid for 7 days. The Grand Canyon is also accessible by a historic tourist train from Williams, AZ, 30 miles (50 km) west of Flagstaff.
Cultural attractions include: Walnut Canyon National Monument prehistoric cliff dwellings, just east of Flagstaff; Wupatki National Monument, extensive prehistoric settlements, northeast of Flagstaff; the Navajo and Hopi Native American Reservations, northeast of Flagstaff; the town of Sedona, an upscale arts community south of Flagstaff.
