The (sub)stellar initial mass function. Star and brown dwarf formation

Gilles Chabrier, Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon

Lowell Observatory, Giclas Lecture Hall, April 11, 2013 at 3:30 p.m.

In this talk, I will first review the present determinations of the stellar initial mass function in the stellar and substellar regimes, both in the field and in young cluster and star forming regions. In the second part of the talk I will examine the main formation scenarios that have been suggested for low-mass star and brown dwarf formation and confront these scenarios to existing observations.
